1. Zone 1 is the widest, catch-all band. Zone 1 spans a full 10 percentage points (50–60%), same as every other zone — but it captures everything below 60% of max HR, which includes your warm-up, your cooldown, recovery segments, and any easy cruising. If your workout was 40 minutes including a 10-minute warm-up and 5-minute cooldown, that's over a third of the session before you even look at the main effort. Apple counts all of it.

2. Your max heart rate estimate is too high. This is the big one. If your zones were calculated with 220-age and your real max is lower (common as we get older, or if you're on medications that blunt heart rate like beta blockers), then your actual zone boundaries are lower than Apple thinks. You could be working at 75% of your true max — solid Zone 3 effort — while your watch, using an inflated max, calls it 58% and files it under Zone 1.

3. Sensor lag at the start of workouts. Optical heart rate sensors take 30–90 seconds to lock onto your pulse properly, especially when you start moving. 5. Easy workouts are supposed to be Zone 1. If you're doing walking workouts, easy recovery runs, or long slow sessions, Zone 1 is the correct result. Zone 1 time isn't wasted time — it builds blood flow, clears metabolic waste, and supports recovery. The "problem" only exists when a workout felt hard but got classified as Zone 1.

Is a high Zone 1 actually bad?

No — and this is the part most people skip. Zone 1 time is legitimate training time.
